Costa Rica - What areas should I visit?
Costa Rica remains one of the most rewarding destinations I plan for clients year after year. It offers that rare combination of natural beauty, adventure, and relaxation, all within a manageable distance from the United States. When thoughtfully arranged, a Costa Rica itinerary flows effortlessly between coast and rainforest, giving travelers a true sense of place without feeling rushed.
I typically design trips around three key regions. The order or combination of areas you visit really depends on what you want to see in do while in Costa Rica.
Guanacaste is ideal for starting or ending your journey with sunshine and ocean views. With easy access through Liberia, it offers beautiful Pacific beaches, well established resorts, and plenty of opportunities for sailing, snorkeling, and simply unwinding.
I often recommend my clients spend time inland in Arenal and Monteverde. The Arenal Volcano region delivers hot springs, waterfalls, and guided rainforest experiences, while Monteverde’s cloud forest provides cooler temperatures and remarkable wildlife viewing. This pairing creates a wonderful contrast and keeps the itinerary engaging.
Finally, Manuel Antonio National Park brings together rainforest and white sand beaches in a way that feels uniquely Costa Rican. It is one of the best places in the country to spot sloths and monkeys, and the walking trails are accessible for most travelers. Boutique hotels tucked into the hillside offer sweeping ocean views, making it a memorable way to close out the trip.
Planning is key in Costa Rica. Travel times between regions are longer than they appear on a map, and selecting the right mix of accommodations and excursions makes all the difference. I guide my clients through timing, transportation, and curated experiences so they can focus on enjoying the journey. With the right preparation, Costa Rica delivers a vacation that feels both adventurous and deeply restorative.
