5 Tips To Get Though TSA Faster
Getting through TSA (Transportation Security Administration) faster can save you time and reduce the stress of traveling. Here are five tips to help you with the security checkpoint process:
Enroll in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry:
If you travel frequently, consider enrolling in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. TSA PreCheck allows you to go through a quicker security screening process, where you can keep your shoes, belt, and light jacket on, and leave your laptop and liquids in your bag. It's a time-saver and makes the security checkpoint much more efficient. If you plan to travel internationally, I recommend Global Entry as you get to use the fast lane when you reenter the USA and it includes TSA PreCheck. The cost difference is minimal to add Global Entry.
Arrive Early and Choose Off-Peak Times:
Arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare, especially during peak travel hours. Early mornings and mid-week flights tend to have shorter security lines. TSA lines are usually shorter when it's not a holiday or peak vacation season. I recommend arriving at least 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international flight.
Prepare Your Documents and Boarding Pass:
Have your boarding pass and ID ready to show to the TSA agent. Keep these items in a quick and easy access place. Consider using digital boarding passes on your smartphone to speed up the process. Make sure your phone is charged and the screen brightness is turned up. Ensure that your ID matches the name on your ticket.
Pack Wisely:
Pack your carry-on bag in an organized manner. Ensure that liquids are in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less and placed in a quart-sized, clear, resealable plastic bag. Remove your laptop and other large electronics from your bag, and place them in a separate bin. This way, you can quickly move through the X-ray machine without needing to open your bag.
Wear Travel-Friendly Clothing:
Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off because you'll need to remove them for the security screening. Avoid wearing excessive jewelry or clothing with metal components that could set off the metal detector. Go for a simple outfit that's easy to put back on after the screening.
Bonus Tip: Consider using the MyTSA app or the TSA website to check current wait times at the airport. This can help you plan your arrival time more effectively.
