Airport Tips
Travel has been quickly rebounding and with that comes rapidly changing travel requirements, longer lines, and more waiting around at the airport. Here is how you can make your next trip to the airport smooth and less stressful:
Check in to your flight. Most airlines allow you to check in to your flights 24 hours or less before departure. If the airline allows, do this simple step the day before.
Arrive Early. For international trips it is recommended that you arrive at least 3 hours prior to departure. For non international trips it is recommended that arrive at least 2 hours prior to departure. Always account for extra time during the holiday seasons.
Take a photo of your parking spot. A simple picture of the parking lot number and aisle number can go a long way when you return from vacation.
Be prepared with your paperwork. Know the travel requirements for your destination and have the appropriate documents electronically flied and printed out for quick access. Most countries are requiring a travel authorization completed and approved days before arrival plus a negative covid tests. You will need to show this when checking in at the airport and possibly again before boarding.
Go to the left after TSA checks your ID. Most people naturally go to the right when getting in line. The shorter lines are often found to the left.
Be prepared at security check points. Wear slip on shoes. Limit jewelry and belts. Have your liquids ready to go in a quart bag. You are limited to one quart-size bag of liquids, gels and aerosols. Common travel items that must comply with the 3-1-1 liquids rule include toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash and lotion.
Carry an empty water bottle. Most airports now have reverse osmosis filtration stations. Fill up and save yourself $5 a bottle. The easiest way to fight jetlag is by staying hydrated.
Be prepared at boarding. Have your bags ready to go and any items (magazine, books, tablet, water, snacks….) you want out with you during the flight in your smaller bag that goes under your seat.
Pack headphones with a jack. Often times planes will have tv screens built into the back of the seat in front of you. These are not Bluetooth capable and you will need headphones with a jack to enjoy the entertainment.
Have grace and patience. There are employee shortages and delays. Know that those working your flight don’t have any control over the situation. Give them, and other passengers, some grace.
Traveling can be stressful. Don’t make it any harder on yourself. Be prepared and take a deep breath if things don’t go exactly according to plan.
