Skagway, AK - White Pass Rail, Summit, Gold Panning, and BBQ
My first experience in Alaska did not disappoint. I spent 7 nights cruising northbound from Vancouver to Whittier on Holland America’s Noordam followed by 3 nights at Denali National Park. Here is what I did at one of the many stops along the way:
I was really looking forward to this adventure as the White Pass Train is always at the top of everyone’s list of must dos. I have had a number of clients do the White Train Pass and had great things to say about how beautiful the area is.
Before heading to the White Train Pass we stopped at Dredge Town. The town is set up as a historical gold rush town with many people in character to bring you back to the late 1800. This was a bit hokey but I can see how children might enjoy it.
We received a lesson in gold panning and then were given our own pan and dirt to find gold of our own (everyone finds gold). After a few swirls, shakes, and dips, I had a few flakes of gold and even a little nugget. I then took my gold to the Gold Shack for weighing and evaluation. I walked away with $16.44 in gold. I was able to take it home in a small container or could make them into a jewelry keepsake or other souvenir.
After the gold rush and BBQ lunch, we headed to the train station. The train follows the route from Skagway to the Klondike gold fields. This old-fashioned narrow-gauge train with vintage cars follows the original route, climbing through rugged terrain beyond the summit of White Pass to Fraser, British Columbia. You don’t need your passport for this adventure as the train just turns around. The views and stories told here were incredible.
I now know why this adventure is at the top of everyone’s list.
There are a number of other adventures to go on in Skagway:
Alpine Lake Kayak
Glassblowing demonstration
Snow Shoeing
Chilkott Trail Hike and Float
Dog Sledding
Horseback Riding
Klondike Rock Climb and Rappel
